Young Audiences works with trained artists from around Louisiana to provide engaging and innovative programs for your classroom. Below you will find a directory of leading artists and arts-educators in the state of Louisiana. 

 

 


Komenka is a non-profit group with members from throughout the New Orleans dance and music community who have trained with internationally recognized choreographers and musicians. Costumes are replicas or carefully designed adaptations of authenticated regional folk dress.

 

Kumbuka Collective presents African folklore from Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Congo, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Members of the Collective are dancers, musicians, historians, jewelers, drum makers, costume designers and painters.

 

Author, storyteller, and life-long performer, Lynda Deniger, brings the animals and elements of Louisiana's ecology to life in dynamic presentations of her fun-to-read children's books.

 

MetroPelican Opera is the educational/outreach "wing" of the New Orleans Opera Association.

 

Mike Artell is an award-winning children’s author/illustrator and TV cartoonist who has written more than 35 books.

 

Andrew McLean, a native New Orleanian trained in North Indian classical music, leads two programs with small ensembles introducing elements of Indian music. Each program depicts the traditional yet contemporary aspects of the main musical style with emphasis on rhythm, melody and vocal percussion. Through creative activities with the students, they also demonstrate how the music of India has begun to impact and interact with the music of the Crescent City.

 

Mariama of N'Kafu has taught and performed in New Orleans area schools for over 20 years. Her company performs annually for events throughout the state.

 

Founded by mezzo-soprano Givonna Joseph, OperaCréole is dedicated to educating students, and sharing with the community the contributions of our people to this musical art form.

 

The band plays a variety of styles: jazz you can dance to, Jewish klezmer, Creole biguines from the Caribbean island of Martinique and folk music from the Balkan nations of Eastern Europe. All melodies are brought to the band using transcriptions made from recordings by Mr. Schenck.

 

In addition to Storytelling with Puppets, the ever-growing roster of Porta-Puppet talents allows us to provide a wide selection of entertainment commodities designed to suit every age at every stage.

 

Heritage Education programs began at the PRC in 2002 and has since given thousands of local students a greater appreciation of their city, neighborhoods, and houses.

 

Internationally-recognized actress, director, and storyteller, Rebecca Frank, offers a variety of theatre performances and workshops to suit the needs of your young audience.

 

Nanette Ledet created "Rhythmic Tapestries" in 2002, as a multi-disciplinary and collaborative performance and arts education concept.

 

Soul Heirs a traditional New Orleans jazz band led by singer, percussionist, song writer and trumpeter Desmian Barnes

 

Terence Rosemore is an award winning Producer, Director, Screenwriter, and Actor who has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

 

Through our stories we travel around the world and experience many cultures. So important in today's world!

 

Michael Patrick Welch and Kerry Gibson lead students in a songwriting workshop utilizing ELA & music skills.

 

David Montana, Second Chief of Yellow Pocahontas tribe and Ausettua AmorAmenkum, Queen, present this visually stunning and exhilarating demonstatrion of Mardi Gras Indian history, songs and dances. Students will love every minute of the performances as they gain an understanding of this rich New Orleans cultural tradition.

 

Todd Shaffer has worked with Young Audiences of Louisiana since 1995 as a teaching artist, site administrator, summer program director, visual arts supervisor and recently took on the position of Arts in Education Specialist with a focus on curriculum.

 

Better known as TONI B!, Toni Batiste has been a Young Audiences educational performer since 1997. Toni B! is also an actress, Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) certified aerobic instructor and trainer/personal trainer/AFAA Examiner.
