Spread the Word to End the Word

Spread the Word to End the Word features vignettes and songs that challenge audiences to take a stand and raise awareness of the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the R-word (‘retarded). The show includes a compilation of original songs and music along with vignettes created with our actors’ input through improvisational workshops. It encourages others to think before they speak! Immediately following the 40 minute musical show, SOLA and InterACT NOLA will challenge the audience to take the pledge and make the commitment to end the r-word not only in their school, but with their families, friends and in their communities.

About InterACT NOLA

We are proud to announce that Special Olympics Louisiana (SOLA), Arc of Greater New Orleans and The Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign are partnering to bring the musical production, Spread the Word to End the Word to your school! The Spread the Word to End the Word Campaign is an ongoing effort by Special Olympics, Best Buddies and our supporters to inspire respect and acceptance through raising the consciousness of society about the R-word and how hurtful words and disrespect can affect people with intellectual disabilities.

InterACT NOLA is a theater company comprised of actors with and without disabilities whose mission is to change perceptions about people with intellectual disabilities through art and expression.  We have performed in major theaters in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes for the past four years to raise awareness of bullying, the use of the R-word and all words that are dehumanizing to people who are considered different.  In addition, InterACT has been invited to perform for educators and for local conferences to spread the word wherever and whenever possible.

Special Olympics Unified Schools seeks to initiate inclusion in all schools with the purpose of promoting school communities that empower young people as agents of change - fostering respect and dignity, and to become advocates for people with intellectual disabilities. With the help of Arc of Greater New Orleans, we hope to add your school to our growing list of Unified Champion Schools and make the pledge to end the R-word.

We would like to bring this performance to your school.  The show runs approximately 40 minutes. Immediately following the show, SOLA and InterACT NOLA will challenge the audiences to take the pledge and make the commitment to end the r-word not only in their school, but with their families, friends and in their communities.
