Afro-Caribbean Showcase

Students will be amazed at this spectacular presentation of Afro-Caribbean culture. From the drummers and dancers in traditional African dress to the larger than lie stil dancers, this program is sure to engage everyone present. Students will learn about the instruments, the dances and even the food that came from Africa to the Caribbean and can be found in Louisiana today.

About Zohar and the Free Spirit Stilt Walkers

Zohar Israel is the Founder, Manager and Musical Director of Free Spirirt African Drum and Dance Company. He is also the founder of the Free Spirit Stilt Walkers. Israel has conducted drum and dance workshops and provides historical information on various countries in Africa and their effect on Louisiana culture. His group has performed at various universities, hotels and festivals throughout the state of Louisiana and Africa. Israel is a specialist in the African drum and perceives his involvement in African drum and dance as a way of fulfilling his responsibility to keep his culture alive.

Caribbean stilt dancing offers all of us-- just like it did for the African peoples brought to the Caribbean-- a dynamic tool for self-expression and exploration.
